The Best Fruit Markets in Barcelona

Posted on July 23, 2018 |

Barcelona is world-renowned for its fine dining scene, attracting millions of tourists from around the world each year. The city is also home to lesser-known fruit markets that sell fresh, succulent produce year-round, from loquats and melons in the spring and summer to pomegranates and persimmons during the colder months. Both guests and locals alike can visit one of the city’s bazaars or farmer’s markets to find delicious fruits and vegetables grown locally.

La Boqueria

One of Europe’s largest and most famous food markets, the Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria is thought to have originated in the 13th century as a pig market. Now, the establishment sells just about every type of fruit and vegetable imaginable. Visitors can also find fish, meats, fine cheeses, and more. A number of stalls sell food and drink for guests who are looking for lunch or a light snack.

Santa Caterina Market

Located in the heart of Ciutat Vella, the Santa Caterina Market was established in 1845 as a neighborhood food market. Since then it’s grown to become a widely popular produce market. It’s built upon the former location of Convent of Santa Caterina and boasts colorful arched ceilings that pay architectural homage to the site’s religious background.

Sant Antoni Market

Designed by Antoni Rovira I Trias in 1882, the Sant Antoni Market boasts sweeping baroque architecture with wrought metal details. Outside, visitors can find stalls selling clothing, souvenirs, and other knick-knacks, while inside lies a bustling fruit market. A striking indoor mosaic mimics the vibrant colors of the produce for sale. This is the place where our Food Tour of authentic Barcelona takes place!.

Mercat de Sants

With its bold modern architecture, the Sants Market features stalls selling all sorts of fresh local produce. Inside, you can find a variety of food and fruit stalls selling a spectrum of produce. More stalls are lined up outside along the road known as the Carretera del Sant Crist.

Mercado del Ninot

Ninot Market, or “Doll’s Market,” sells much more than just toys. Outside, you can find a wide variety of goods such as clothing and jewelry. Inside, visitors can buy a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. The venue underwent renovations recently and now boasts an iconic modern facade.

Barcelona is home to a variety of sprawling markets where visitors can find fresh, local produce while admiring the historic architecture. Fruits and vegetables of all types are available year-round, making the perfect snack or addition to any meal. Food enthusiasts are bound to appreciate the color and variety that can be found wandering through Barcelona’s top fruit markets.
